San Ramon, Danville, Alamo, Walnut Creek
San Ramon, Danville, Alamo and Walnut Creek are at the northern end of the San Ramon Valley. The area is dominated on the west by the Las Trampas hills, and on the east by Mt. Diablo. Vibrant green in the winter and spring, gold in the summer and fall, the oak-studded hills provide beauty all year as well as many recreational opportunities in the parks and open space.
San Ramon was primarily a bedroom community with tracts of homes built in the 1960s and 1970s. Later housing was expanded to the east in The Bridges, Gale Ranch and Windemere. in 2018, the city opened The Lot, a bustling area of shops, restaurants, movie theaters to provide the residents all they need to stay in town and be entertained with live music, special events and the feel of a town center.
Danville is known for its tree-lined neighborhoods of single-story and two-story homes on both sides of the 680 freeway, mostly on lots of nearly a quarter acre or more. Danville's downtown is here, with blocks of restaurants, unique shops, cafes with outdoor seating, and many fun events throughout the year, including the weekly Saturday farmer's market on Railroad Ave. in the 1970s the development of Blackhawk was built to the east, with mostly large, custom homes but other housing has been built since in the area. Blackhawk Plaza has wonderful restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and events held throughout the year.
Alamo is an unincorporated area of mostly larger homes on larger lots, including some horse properties. The old feed store is still in business, and Alamo has an almost rural feel, with large trees, large lots, and mostly custom homes. The exclusive community of Diablo is here too, where many homes are former summer homes of wealthier San Francisco families from the early 1900s, where one gets one's mail from the central post office, and the country club is the center of recreation.
To the north is Walnut Creek, a larger city with broad housing types, from homes in the south with an almost rural feel due to the large lot sizes and old trees, to newer housing in the central and eastern direction, and brand-new urban high-rises in the downtown area so people can walk to all their activities and take BART to San Francisco. There are many streets in the downtown filled with shoppers, restaurant-goers, movie and theater lovers, and people simply enjoying strolling the shady sidewalks.
